Is there a Chinese alphabet? No. Chinese has no alphabet at all. It's written with characters (汉字, hànzì), where each symbol stands for a whole syllable and carries meaning, rather than letters that spell out sounds. What you may have seen called a "Chinese alphabet" online is either pinyin (the official way of writing Chinese sounds with Latin letters) or a decorative font, but neither is an alphabet the way English's A to Z is.

What Chinese uses instead of an alphabet

English builds words from 26 letters that each represent a sound. Chinese builds text from characters that each represent a syllable with a meaning attached:

我 (wǒ) = "I"
爱 (ài) = "to love"
你 (nǐ) = "you"

我爱你 is three characters, three syllables, one sentence: "I love you." There's no smaller spelling layer underneath. Characters themselves are built from reusable parts called radicals, which hint at meaning and sound, but those parts aren't letters; you can't sound a word out from them the way you can with c-a-t.

So what's pinyin, then?

Pinyin (拼音, "spelled sounds") is the official romanization system: it writes Mandarin pronunciation using Latin letters plus tone marks. 你好 is written nǐ hǎo. Every Chinese learner (including every schoolchild in China) starts with it, and it's how everyone types Chinese on phones and computers.

But pinyin is a pronunciation notation, not a writing system people read books in:

Real-world Chinese (signs, menus, subtitles, texts) is written in characters, not pinyin.
Mandarin has a small number of possible syllables, so pinyin alone is ambiguous: shì could be 是 (to be), 事 (matter), 试 (to try), or a dozen others. The character settles it.

How many "letters" does Chinese have, then?

Since there's no alphabet, the honest count is zero letters and a lot of characters: around 100,000 exist on paper, educated adults know roughly 8,000, and about 3,000 covers modern everyday reading. Taiwan teaches children pronunciation with zhuyin fuhao (注音符号), nicknamed bopomofo after its first four symbols: ㄅㄆㄇㄈ. It has 37 symbols and works like pinyin does on the mainland: a pronunciation aid and typing method, not the writing system itself. How do people type without an alphabet?

Easily, and this surprises most beginners. You type the pinyin, and the keyboard suggests characters: type "nihao," tap 你好, done. The ambiguity problem solves itself because the software ranks candidates by context and frequency. Handwriting input and speech input exist too, but pinyin typing is what nearly everyone uses. What the no-alphabet thing means for learners
