HSK 7-9 Vocabulary: How the 5,636-Word Advanced Band Works
HSK 7-9 vocabulary spans 5,636 new words in a single advanced band, bringing the full HSK 3.0 system to 11,092 words. Unlike levels 1-6, the top band doesn't split its list per level: one exam covers levels 7, 8, and 9, and your score decides which of the three you're awarded. Below: how the band works, a sample of the vocabulary, and how to study for a list this size.
If you're not sure how the band fits into the wider system, start with our HSK levels guide; if you're mid-journey, the HSK 6 vocabulary list is the last per-level list before this one.
What makes HSK 7-9 vocabulary different
- It's one pooled list. There's no official "HSK 7 words vs HSK 8 words" split. You study the band as a whole, and the exam samples from all of it.
- It goes literary. Chengyu (four-character idioms like 爱不释手 below), written-formal vocabulary, and precise near-synonyms dominate. This is the Chinese of editorials, literature, and professional life.
- It assumes reading volume. 5,636 words is not a flashcard project. At typical review rates that's years of deck maintenance; the band is designed for people who read and listen at native level, where these words recur naturally.
- The exam is broader too. HSK 7-9 adds translation and speaking sections to the usual listening, reading, and writing, in one longer sitting.

How to study a 5,636-word band
- Flip the ratio all the way. At this level, 90% of your time belongs in native and near-native material: essays, novels, podcasts, dramas. The list is a map for auditing, not a syllabus for cramming. That's the logic of the immersion approach taken to its conclusion.
- Mine ruthlessly, review lightly. Only card the words that keep blocking comprehension. Chenjin's reader saves any tapped word with its sentence to flashcards, so the deck stays anchored in texts you've read.
- Give chengyu their own lane. Idioms reward story-based learning (each one is a compressed anecdote) and they're heavily tested. Chenjin's HSK 5+ games include a chengyu-focused Night Peddler trail in the games hub if you want drilling that doesn't feel like drilling.
- Audit with the grid. The vocabulary page tracks the 7-9 band like every other level, so you can see coverage grow as your reading compounds.
- Keep output honest. The exam includes speaking and translation. Reading silently won't carry those sections; regular speaking practice with feedback (our Tone Coach covers the pronunciation half) needs to be in the routine.
Frequently asked questions
How many words are in HSK 7-9?
5,636 new words beyond HSK 6, for a cumulative total of 11,092 across the whole HSK 3.0 system. The band also expects recognition of about 3,000 characters.
Is there a separate list for HSK 7, 8, and 9?
No. The three levels share one vocabulary list and one exam; your score places you at 7, 8, or 9. That's why this guide treats the band as a single project.
Who should take the HSK 7-9 exam?
People who need certified advanced Chinese: graduate programs taught in Chinese, translation and interpreting work, media and government roles. If you don't need the certificate, the band still works well as a long-term curriculum for reaching educated-native reading range.
How long does HSK 7-9 take after HSK 6?
Years, not months, and that's fine: it's the difference between "understands almost everything" and "reads literature comfortably." Consistent daily immersion moves you through it faster than any cramming schedule; see how long does it take to learn Chinese for realistic math.
