Can speaking practice without a partner really work?
For pronunciation and fluency of production, yes: what you need is output plus honest feedback, and pitch comparison gives you feedback most partners are too polite to. Conversation skill still needs conversations eventually, but you'll arrive with tones people understand.
I'm too self-conscious to speak in front of anyone. Is this private?
Completely. Recordings are scored for you, not posted anywhere, and there's no leaderboard for pronunciation. The whole point is a place to be bad at it until you aren't.
Which should I start with, Tone Coach or voice dictation?
Tone Coach for single words and short phrases while your tones are settling; voice dictation once you can read simple sentences and want to produce whole lines. They share the same underlying scoring.
