Chinese Translation Practice for Students and Working Linguists

Chinese translation practice needs a particular setup: one sentence in front of you, no English visible until you've committed to your own version, then a reference to check against. Chenjin's sentence view does exactly that across a library of graded articles, with typed dictation to sharpen listening and a dictionary that lists every sense of a word.

Chinese translation practice in Chenjin's sentence view: one sentence with pinyin and its revealed English translation

Every sense, not just the first

The dictionary popup lists all of a word's CC-CEDICT senses, with the traditional form and classifiers, so a choice between "to handle" and "to process" is made with the full entry in front of you. Word pages add example sentences and the word family for the near-synonyms.

Listening translation starts with dictation

Dictation plays a sentence and you type what you heard, graded character by character, with a weakness map of the sounds you keep missing. Cloze mode blanks only the hard words. Both are part of the Plus plan.

Voice mode flips it: you hear the sentence and speak it back, and the grading shows which characters you dropped or mispronounced. For interpreting students that is the closer drill.

Register from HSK 3 to 7

The library runs from simple narratives to HSK 7 essays, news, and literary fiction, so you can practice on plain prose one day and on a formal editorial the next. Each article's sentence translation was written to line up one line per sentence.

The familiarity meter on every card tells you how much of an article's vocabulary you already know, which is a quick way to pick a text that tests structure rather than lookups.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a reference translation for every article?

Library articles show an English line for each sentence when you reveal it in sentence view. Your own uploads get the tap dictionary but no reference translation.

Which direction is this for?

Chinese into English. For the other direction, the reader still helps you check your output against native text, but there's no grading of English into Chinese.

What's free?
