Chinese for Mahjong Players: Read the Tiles You Already Hold
Chinese for mahjong players starts with fewer than twenty characters: the four winds, the three dragons, the numbers one to nine, and the 万 on the character suit. You already recognize them by shape. Chenjin gives each one a page with the pronunciation, the stroke order, and the words it builds, so the tiles become the first Chinese you can read out loud.

Seven tiles, seven character pages
东南西北 are the four winds and 中发白 are the three dragons. Each has a Chenjin character page: the tone-marked pinyin, an audio button so you hear it said properly, the animated stroke order, and a word family that shows where the character turns up in everyday Chinese (东西 for "thing", 北京 for Beijing, 发 in 发财 "get rich", which is why the green dragon is lucky).
The pages are free and need no account. Sign in and you can mark each tile character known, which makes the reader skip it when you move on to real text.

Count the character suit
The 万 tiles print a number and the character 万 (ten thousand). 一二三四五六七八九 are the same nine numerals you see on the tiles, and they are also the first numbers in any Chinese class. Tap any of them in Chenjin's dictionary for the sound and the meaning, then try the number words in the games hub, where the shop scenarios have customers asking for items out loud.

Print a sheet and write them yourself
The free practice sheet generator takes 东南西北中发白 (or any characters you type) and lays out a 田字格 page with the stroke order diagram, pinyin, and fading guide characters to trace. Writing a character a dozen times is the fastest way to stop confusing 东 and 车 at the table.

Frequently asked questions
Does Chenjin teach the rules of mahjong?
No. It teaches the Chinese on the tiles: how to say and write the characters and what they mean. Rules vary by region and are better learned at the table.
My set uses traditional characters. Does that matter?
Most tiles use forms that are the same in both scripts, and the few that differ (東, 發) show up on each character page as the traditional form. You can switch the whole reader to traditional in Settings.
I only want the tile characters. Do I need an account?
No. The character pages and the practice sheet generator are free and public. An account adds the reader, flashcards, and games if you decide to go further.
