Verb Reduplication: Softening an Action with 看看 and 试一试
Chinese has a neat trick for making an action sound lighter and friendlier: you just say the verb twice. 看 ("look") becomes 看看 ("take a look"), 试 ("try") becomes 试试 ("give it a try"). It's small, it's everywhere, and it instantly makes you sound more natural. Here's how it works.
What reduplication does
Doubling a verb softens it. The action feels brief, casual, and low-pressure, like "just give it a quick go." It takes the edge off a plain command or request.
Compare:
- 看! — Look! (a sharp order)
- 看看。 — Have a look. (gentle, inviting)
Same verb, very different tone. The doubled version sounds relaxed and polite, which is why you hear it constantly in everyday speech.
It carries a few related shades of meaning: "do it a little," "do it briefly," or "try doing it." Which one depends on context, but they all share that soft, easygoing feel.
Single-syllable verbs: 看看, 想想
For a one-character verb, just repeat it. The second copy is usually said in a neutral tone.
- 看看 — take a look
- 想想 — think about it
- 听听 — have a listen
- 试试 — give it a try
In sentences:
- 你看看这个。 — Take a look at this.
- 让我想想。 — Let me think.
You can drop a 一 between the two copies to mean "do it once / a bit." 看一看 and 看看 mean basically the same thing, with 看一看 sounding slightly more drawn out.
- 我看一看。 — Let me take a look.
Two-syllable verbs: 休息休息
For a two-character verb, you repeat the whole word, not each syllable. So 休息 ("rest") becomes 休息休息, following an AB-AB shape.
- 休息休息 — take a little rest
- 商量商量 — talk it over a bit
- 学习学习 — do some studying
In a sentence:
- 你应该休息休息。 — You should take a little rest.
- 我们商量商量吧。 — Let's talk it over.
A common mistake is doubling each syllable (休休息息), which is wrong. Two-syllable verbs repeat as a block: AB-AB.
The 一下 connection
You met 一下 in another article, and it does almost the same job as reduplication. 看一下 and 看看 are very close in meaning, both softening the action into "just take a quick look."
- 看看 ≈ 看一下 — have a look
- 试试 ≈ 试一下 — give it a try
So 试一试 (the title of this article) blends both ideas: it's the verb 试 reduplicated with 一 in the middle, and it lands in the same gentle territory as 试一下. You'll hear all of these and they're interchangeable in most situations.
Where it doesn't work
Reduplication only fits active, controllable actions, things you choose to do. It doesn't work with:
- Verbs of state or feeling: you can't reduplicate 是, 知道, 喜欢 to soften them.
- Actions that are already complete: reduplication points at something light or upcoming, so it clashes with a finished action. You wouldn't reduplicate a verb that already has 了 marking completion.
If the verb describes a deliberate little action you're about to do or inviting someone to do, reduplication fits. If it describes a fixed state or a done deal, it doesn't.
A quick recap
Say a verb twice to soften it into something brief and casual. One-syllable verbs repeat simply (看看, 试试), optionally with 一 in the middle (看一看). Two-syllable verbs repeat as a whole block (休息休息), never syllable by syllable. The effect matches 一下 closely, so 试试, 试一试, and 试一下 all mean "give it a try." Use it for active, chosen actions and your requests will sound a whole lot warmer.
