What HSK 5 reading looks like

十几年前，如果你在中国的街上问一个年轻人爱喝什么，答案常常是茶或者别的。而今天，越来越多的年轻人手里拿着的，是一杯咖啡。
Shí jǐ nián qián, rúguǒ nǐ zài Zhōngguó de jiē shang wèn yí ge niánqīngrén ài hē shénme, dá'àn chángcháng shì chá huòzhě biéde. Ér jīntiān, yuè lái yuè duō de niánqīngrén shǒu lǐ ná zhe de, shì yì bēi kāfēi.
A dozen years ago, if you asked a young person on a Chinese street what they liked to drink, the answer was usually tea. Today, more and more of them are holding a cup of coffee.
The marks of HSK 5: longer sentences with embedded structures (手里拿着的，是…), a contrast built across two sentences instead of one, and words like 答案 (dá'àn, answer) that lean abstract. If this feels heavy, build up at HSK 4; if it's smooth, look at HSK 6.

- 金银岛: Treasure Island. A boy at his parents' small inn on the coast, an old sailor with a sea chest, and a map that ruins everyone's peace.
- 云岭魔犬: The Hound of the Baskervilles, retold in 1920s China. A detective story with fog, a family curse, and a dog you'll hear before you see.

How to practice at HSK 5
- Mix fiction and nonfiction. Novels build volume and flow; articles build the abstract vocabulary (economy, society, science) that HSK 5 tests and native content assumes.
- Collect 成语 deliberately. When an idiom appears, save it as a flashcard with the sentence it came in. Idioms out of context don't stick; idioms in a story do.
- Summarize in Chinese. After each article, say (or type) a one-sentence summary in Chinese. It converts passive reading into active recall.
- Keep listening attached. Read along with the audio at least once per text. HSK 5 vocabulary is where reading-only learners quietly fall behind in listening.

Frequently asked questions
How many words do I need for HSK 5 reading?
The cumulative HSK 5 list is roughly 4,300 words (HSK 3.0). Graded texts at the level read comfortably from about 3,000 common words. As always, the one-page test settles it: more than 7 lookups per page means the text is too hard for volume reading.
Can I read native Chinese content at HSK 5?
Selectively. Chat messages, product pages, and simple web fiction are within reach. Native novels and news still cost too many lookups per page to be your main diet. A practical split: 80% graded material for volume, 20% native material you care about.
Is HSK 5 considered fluent?
It's solidly upper-intermediate. You can read widely, hold real conversations, and consume media with support. The common description is "comfortable in daily life, still working in specialized topics," and reading volume is the main road forward.
