Fixed Multi-Part Constructions:

By the advanced level, you've met plenty of paired connectives: 因为... 就, and so on. This article covers three more that belong to the same family but sit a bit higher in register and show up more in structured writing and prepared speech than in everyday chat. Getting comfortable with them makes a real difference to the quality of formal written Chinese.

一方面: "on one hand... on the other hand"

一方面 (yī fāngmiàn...yī fāngmiàn) lays out two aspects of the same situation side by side. It's the equivalent of "on one hand... on the other hand" in English, though it doesn't have to imply tension or contradiction. Often it's just pointing to two things that are both true at the same time.

一方面 + [First Aspect], 一方面 + [Second Aspect]

(Zhè fèn gōngzuò yī fāngmiàn xīnshuǐ bùcuò, yī fāngmiàn lí jiā hěn jìn, suǒyǐ tā hěn mǎnyì.) -- This job pays well on one hand, and on the other it's close to home, so she's very happy with it.
(Yī fāngmiàn xūyào tígāo xiàolǜ, yī fāngmiàn yě yào bǎozhèng zhìliàng, zhè liǎng zhě bìng bù máodùn.) -- On one hand we need to improve efficiency, and on the other we need to ensure quality. The two aren't contradictory.

The second 一方面 is often replaced by 另一方面 (lìng yī fāngmiàn, "on the other hand") to make the two-sidedness more explicit:

  • 政府一方面加大了基础设施投入,另一方面也推进了相关制度改革。-- The government on one hand increased investment in infrastructure, and on the other pushed forward institutional reform.

If you've got three points to make, 一方面...另一方面... can start to feel a bit clunky. For three or more points it's usually cleaner to switch to 首先...其次...最后 (firstly... secondly... finally).

是因为: "the reason why... is because"

是因为 (zhī suǒyǐ...shì yīnwèi) is the formal written way of explaining why something happened. In spoken Chinese you'd just say 因为... What makes this construction different is the order: it starts with the result and saves the reason for the end, which puts more weight on the explanation.

(Zhè xiàng zhèngcè zhī suǒyǐ shòudào guǎngfàn zhīchí, shì yīnwèi tā qièshí jiějué le mínzhòng de shíjì wèntí.) -- The reason this policy's gotten such wide support is that it genuinely addresses people's real concerns.
(Tā zhī suǒyǐ nénggòu chénggōng, shì yīnwèi tā shǐzhōng bǎochí zhe duì mùbiāo de zhuānzhù.) -- The reason he was able to succeed is that he kept his focus on his goal the whole time.
-- The reason we made this decision is that we weighed up factors from all sides.

It's worth comparing this directly to the spoken version:

  • 口语: 因为他太努力了,所以他成功了。-- He succeeded because he worked so hard.
-- The reason he succeeded is that he put in effort most people can't imagine.

The written version starts with the result, holds the explanation till the end, and gives it more weight. The construction does some of that work for you automatically.

In spoken Chinese, 之所以...是因为 doesn't sound wrong, but it does sound deliberate and a bit formal. It's best saved for writing and prepared speech.

还: "not only... but also"

还 (bùjǐn...hái) is a close cousin of 不但...而且 from an earlier article. Both mean "not only... but also," and in a lot of sentences they're interchangeable. There are a few practical differences worth knowing.

不仅 + [First Point], 还/也/而且 + [Second Point]

(Zhè běn shū bùjǐn nèiróng fēngfù, hái wénbǐ yōuměi.) -- This book isn't only rich in content, it's also beautifully written.
(Tā bùjǐn huì shuō Zhōngwén, hái huì shuō Rìyǔ hé Xībānyáyǔ.) -- He can speak not only Chinese but also Japanese and Spanish.
-- This reform didn't just reduce costs, it also improved overall efficiency and strengthened the team.

Both work in spoken and written Chinese, but 不仅 leans a bit more formal and shows up more in writing and prepared speech. 不但 is perfectly natural in conversation. In a formal essay or report, 不仅 is usually the better fit.

还 after 不仅 feels lighter and works in both registers. 而且 is a bit more emphatic, signaling that the second point is significant or surprising. If the second point is the real news, 而且 fits better.

-- This plan isn't just workable; it's actually thirty percent cheaper than what we have now. (而且 signals that the cost point is the main news.)
-- She's not only smart but also hardworking. (还 adds the second point more evenly.)

不仅如此 (bùjǐn rúcǐ, "not only that") is a handy fixed phrase for adding a further point beyond what was just said. It often opens a new sentence:

  • 这项技术已经在多个领域得到应用。不仅如此,研究团队还在开发下一代系统。-- This technology's already being used in multiple fields. Not only that, but the research team is also developing a next-generation system.

Using all three in formal writing

These three constructions work well together in analytical writing: 之所以...是因为 to open an explanation, 一方面...另一方面 to lay out two parallel factors, and 不仅如此 to push into a third point. Getting fluent with them is a practical step toward writing Chinese that feels structured and considered rather than just grammatically correct.
