Conditional sentences express an "if... then..." relationship. Chinese has several patterns for this, and choosing between them is mostly about what kind of condition you are describing. Is it a general possibility? A sufficient condition? The only condition? Each has its own word.
如果...就: the general "if... then"
如果 (rúguǒ, "if") is the most common and neutral way to introduce a condition. 就 (jiù, "then") appears in the result clause. Together they cover most everyday conditional sentences.
(Rúguǒ xià yǔ, wǒmen jiù bù qù le.) -- If it rains, we won't go.
(Rúguǒ nǐ yǒu wèntí, jiù lái wèn wǒ.) -- If you have a question, come ask me.
(Rúguǒ míngtiān tiānqì hǎo, wǒmen jiù qù páshān.) -- If the weather is nice tomorrow, we'll go hiking.
就 can be dropped in casual speech when the meaning is clear, but keeping it in is always safe and sounds natural.
要是: the casual twin of 如果
要是 (yàoshi) means exactly the same as 如果 and also pairs with 就. The only real difference is register: 要是 is more casual and conversational, while 如果 works in both spoken and written Chinese.
(Yàoshi nǐ bù lái, wǒ yī ge rén qù.) -- If you don't come, I'll go by myself.
(Yàoshi yǒu jīhuì, wǒ hěn xiǎng qù Rìběn.) -- If I get the chance, I'd really like to go to Japan.
In everyday conversation, 要是 and 如果 are fully interchangeable. Pick whichever feels natural. In writing, stick with 如果.
只要...就: "as long as... then"
只要 (zhǐyào) introduces a sufficient condition. It means that the condition alone is enough to guarantee the result, and nothing more is needed. The feeling is "as long as X, then Y will follow."
(Zhǐyào nǔlì, jiù néng chénggōng.) -- As long as you work hard, you can succeed.
(Zhǐyào nǐ lái, wǒmen jiù hěn gāoxìng.) -- As long as you come, we'll be happy.
(Zhǐyào yǒu wǎngluò, jiù kěyǐ gōngzuò.) -- As long as there's internet, you can work.
The key feeling of 只要 is sufficiency and ease. You are saying this one condition is all that is needed.
只有...才: "only if... then"
只有 (zhǐyǒu) introduces a necessary condition. The result cannot happen without this specific condition being met. Where 只要 says "this is enough," 只有 says "this is the only way."
(Zhǐyǒu nǔlì, cái néng chénggōng.) -- Only by working hard can you succeed.
(Zhǐyǒu nǐ lái, wǒ cái qù.) -- Only if you come will I go.
(Zhǐyǒu duō liànxí, Hànyǔ cái huì jìnbù.) -- Only by practicing more will your Chinese improve.
The 只要/只有 contrast is one of the more important distinctions in this group. Both translate roughly as "only if" in English, but they point in opposite directions:
- 只要 = this condition is sufficient (easy bar to clear)
- 只有 = this condition is necessary (no other way)
Both use 就 or 才 in the result clause, which also signals the difference: 只要 pairs with 就, and 只有 pairs with 才.
除非: "unless"
除非 (chúfēi) means "unless" and introduces the one condition that would change the outcome. It often pairs with 否则 (fǒuzé, "otherwise") or 才 in the result clause.
(Chúfēi nǐ dàoqiàn, fǒuzé wǒ bù yuánliàng nǐ.) -- Unless you apologize, I won't forgive you.
(Chúfēi xià yǔ, wǒmen cái bù qù.) -- We won't go unless it rains.
(Chúfēi nǐ bāng wǒ, fǒuzé wǒ zuò bù wán.) -- Unless you help me, I won't be able to finish.
除非 is essentially the negative flip of 如果: instead of "if this happens, then that," it says "only if this doesn't happen does that hold." Use it when you want to name the single exception that would break the rule.
How they compare
| Pattern | Meaning | Key feel |
|---|---|---|
If... then | General condition, neutral |
就 | If... then | Same as 如果, casual speech |
As long as... then | Sufficient condition, easy bar |
Only if... then | Necessary condition, no other way |
Unless... | Exception that would change everything |
For everyday conversation, 如果...就 and 要是...就 handle most situations. 只要 and 只有 are worth distinguishing carefully since they look similar but mean opposite things. 除非 is less common but very useful when you need it, and once you learn the pattern it is easy to use.
